The Not Fun League fined Mr. Ochocinco for wearing a sombrero after getting a touchdown against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at Detroit Lions Stadium. The amount was $30,000.

Before the game, Chad Ochocinco said, “What I’ve planned for today will get me fined when I score but it’s so worth it.”

To respond to the No Fun League, Chad Ochocinco said, “Adam, this Sunday when I score I’m taking that loud horn from the Viking mascot and using it…is that a fine, too?”

It was the fourth straight win for the Packers (8-4), solidifying their spot in the NFC wild-card race. But it certainly wasn’t pretty.

The teams committed 23 penalties for 310 yards, tying for the second-highest yardage total in an NFL game.

The Ravens (6-6) struggled in coverage without star safety Ed Reed, who sat out with hip and ankle injuries.

-Judd Zulgad, Star Tribune

The silence in the Vikings locker room late Sunday night was all one needed to observe to understand just how painful of loss this team had suffered at the hands of the Arizona Cardinals.

Not only had the Vikings easily played their worst game of the season in a 30-17 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals but they also had lost defensive captain and middle linebacker E.J. Henderson to a fractured femur in his left leg. Players choked up as they attempted to discuss the injury to Henderson.

Coach Brad Childress said Henderson would remain in a Phoenix-area hospital tonight and probably undergo surgery. The severity of Henderson’s situation — the second time he has suffered a season-ending injury in as many years — made the loss almost secondary.

“It’s a horrible injury,” linebacker Ben Leber said as he fought his emotions. “I feel bad for the guy. He has battled through so much.”

The Vikings, meanwhile, will have to figure out exactly what went wrong at University of Phoenix Stadium. A national television audience watched the Cardinals take it to the Vikings and hand Brad Childress’ team only its second defeat of the season. The Vikings could have clinched a postseason berth with a victory but instead looked nothing like a playoff team.

“It was pretty clear to me from where I stood that we got outplayed, we got out-tempoed,” Childress said. “We kind of abandoned the things that have gotten us here. I’m not going to point to any one specific area because it was wide ranging. Offense, defense and special teams. It’s disappointing [and we've] got to rectify that. But we didn’t have ‘it’ tonight and we faced a team that was a more desperate football team and they played like that.”

Childress is correct in that the Vikings problems were wide spread. A pass defense that was missing cornerback Antoine Winfield (foot) for the sixth game in a row gave up 285 passing yards and three touchdowns to Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner, who returned after missing one game because of a concussion. The Vikings did not have a sack.

Steve Breaston returned a first-quarter punt 64 yards to the Vikings 2-yard line to set up Arizona’s first touchdown, a slant from Warner to Anquan Boldin. Boldin finished with seven receptions for 98 yards and two touchdowns and Larry Fitzgerald had eight catches for 143 yards and a touchdown.

The 38-year-old Warner certainly outplayed 40-year-old Brett Favre in the battle of aging quarterbacks. Favre, who had only three interceptions entering Sunday, threw two in the third quarter and ended up throwing 45 passes. He also appeared to injure his hand when it collided with the helmet of a Cardinals pass rusher in the second quarter.

Pro Bowl running back Adrian Peterson was held to 19 yards on 13 carries, the second-lowest single-game rushing total of his career, and for a brief period in the first quarter the Vikings were without starting offensive tackles Phil Loadholt and Bryant McKinnie.

“We came into the game too relaxed,” said tight end Visanthe Shiancoe, who gave the Vikings a 7-0 lead when he caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Favre in the first quarter. “We didn’t execute and left a lot of plays out there. They played at a high level today and we did not at all. We weren’t playing Vikings football.”

Favre downplayed any pain he might have been experiencing after being sacked three times and hitting his hand.

“They outplayed us,” Favre said. “They are a good football team. I’m not going to sit here and make excuses. We didn’t play as well as they did in all phases. … We haven’t had to deal with losses that often but I like our resolved. Out ability to let things go.”

Letting this loss go ASAP will be extremely important. The Vikings, who pounded weak teams in Detroit, Seattle and Chicago while sweeping a three-game homestand, will face the Cincinnati Bengals (9-3) next Sunday at the Metrodome. The Vikings missed a chance to wrapup a postseason spot on Sunday night but remain in very good shape in the NFC North.

“We’ll come back,” said Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen, who had a surprisingly quiet night despite being matched up against a first-time starter at left tackle in Jeremy Bridges. “I feel sorry for the Cincinnati Bengals because we’ll have a good week of work, we’re going home and we’ll rectify this. It will be corrected. We’re still 10-2. Our destiny’s in our hands. These are easy to swallow for the fact that it’s so lopsided.”

What might have been most disturbing about this performance for Childress was that for the first time this season the Vikings looked rattled and frustrated. Perhaps that was because they realized as the game kept slipping away that the road to the NFC title is almost certainly now going to go through New Orleans.

The Vikings are now two games behind the Saints (12-0) in the race for the best record in the NFC with four games remaining. The Saints rallied from a 10-point deficit early in the fourth quarter Sunday at Washington to beat the Redskins 33-30 in overtime.

The Cardinals improved to 8-4 and are atop the NFC West but Arizona is only 3-3 at home this season so this type of dominant performance certainly wasn’t expected. The Vikings had won seven of their past eight road games dating to last season and had been 4-1 on the road this year.

“I’m anxious to watch the highlights on the news later,” Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett said. “I’m pretty sure everybody is going to talk about what Brett Favre did wrong. How Brett did this wrong and that wrong, but not talk about how our defense stood up today. … I told the guys that we just beat a team that could be a Pro Bowl team. It’s like an all-star team.”

It didn’t look like it on Sunday.

The Cardinals led 21-10 at halftime after Warner scorched the Vikings pass defense for 200 yards and three touchdowns in the opening 30 minutes. Boldin had seven catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns and Fitzgerald had four catches for 71 yards and a score at the half.

Warner’s first scoring pass was about as easy as it gets, coming on a 2-yard slant to Boldin after Cardinals punt returner Steve Breaston eluded tackle attempts by Heath Farwell, Sanford and punter Chris Kluwe in returning a punt 64 yards to the Arizona 2. Sanford recovered after his missed tackle to get Breaston before he got into the end zone.

That tied the score 7-7 and it would remain that way until Warner led his offense on another short drive in the second quarter. Starting at their own 42, Breaston ran off left end for a 19-yard gain. Warner, working from the shotgun, then found Boldin at the Vikings 26. Boldin beat Vikings cornerback Cedric Griffin to make the catch, streaked down the far sideline, made a nice move on safety Tyrell Johnson around the 6 and went into the end zone.

Rookie right tackle Phil Loadholt suffered an injury to his right shoulder on Harvin’s run but was able to return later in the half. That was one of several injuries the Vikings suffered against a physical Cardinals team. Left tackle Bryant McKinnie left the game in the first quarter with ankle issue but returned. Shiancoe, Johnson and Griffin also were shaken up.

Johnson suffered a concussion and said after the game he couldn’t remember details of the injury. Given the NFL’s concern about concussions, Johnson is sure to be closely monitored this week.

The Vikings’ play Sunday was a major departure from last season when they routed the Cardinals 35-14 in December at University of Phoenix Stadium. “We didn’t show up ready to play,” linebacker Chad Greenway said. “We didn’t show up with enough tempo. It was the complete opposite of what happened here last year and we were that team that pretty much got our [butts] kicked up and down the field. It’s as simple as that.”

The Minnesota Vikings’ offense doesn’t just burn defenders — it burns rubber.

Two days after star running back Adrian Peterson was cited for driving 109 mph in a 55 mph zone, his teammate, wide receiver Bernard Berrian, was ticketed for topping the century mark on an area interstate, according to media reports in the Twin Cities.

On Friday, the Minnesota State Patrol confirmed that Berrian was cited Monday night for driving 104 mph in a 60 mph zone on Interstate 694 in suburban Oakdale, according to reports.

Berrian was pulled over at 9:38 p.m. local time Monday in a southbound lane of the highway, according to reports.

The state trooper who pulled Berrian over said he was polite and cooperative, and the trooper apparently did not realize he had stopped a member of the Vikings, WCCO-TV reported.

Last Saturday, Peterson was cited for driving 109 mph in a 55 mph zone in Edina.

“It is a little bit odd, but on the other hand, I like the publicity about it, because it sort of tells people here are the ramifications, first of all,” Capt. Matt Langer of the Minnesota State Patrol said, according to WCCO-TV. “And you’re going to get caught.”

Video footage of Peterson’s traffic stop Nov. 28 shows he reacted with disbelief when he was informed how fast he was going, according to media reports.

“How fast you think you were going?” an Edina police officer asked him, according to The (Minneapolis) Star Tribune. When Peterson replied, “85,” the officer replied, “You think you were 30 over the limit? I got you going 109.”

After giving Peterson the ticket, the officer told Peterson, “Good luck to you tomorrow,” according to the report.

Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson said Thursday that he’ll be more careful after police clocked him driving 109 mph on Crosstown Hwy. 62 in Edina over the weekend and cited him for speeding.

Peterson told The Associated Press he “got a little speeding ticket. I need to be more aware of the speed I was going and not let it happen again.”

Peterson was pulled over just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday while driving his BMW in a 55-mph zone, Edina police spokeswoman Molly Anderson said. She said Peterson was given a citation and allowed to drive away after what appeared to be a “very routine” traffic stop.

Anderson said police clocked the 24-year-old Peterson going 109 mph, but Peterson told the AP he wasn’t going that fast.

“But I know it was (a) speeding ticket, and that’s what I got issued for,” Peterson said.

The stop happened the night before Peterson ran for 85 yards and a touchdown in a 36-10 victory over Chicago. The All-Pro also fumbled twice.

Peterson said he was headed to the downtown hotel where the team stays the night before home games. He said he was not late at that point.

“After I got pulled over, then I was late,” Peterson said.

Posted by Matt Field

Calm down, Mercury Morris, we are all aware that the best the Minnesota Vikings can finish in the regular season is 15-1.

Nonetheless, if the Vikings win the Super Bowl this year, their fans may have the best argument among all fans to claim that their Vikings are the best NFL team of all time.

There is still a lot of football left to be played this season. However, with a little help, the 2009 Vikings have the opportunity to be hailed as the best squad to ever take the football field in the NFL.

How could Vikings fans have the best argument among all fans when the Minnesota Vikings would have the same record as the 1984 Super Bowl Champion San Francisco 49ers and the 1985 Super Bowl Champion Chicago Bears?

The argument has to do with the competition that the Vikings are likely to face in the playoffs.

The Minnesota Vikings can do something that the 1972 Miami Dolphins were not able to accomplish. The Vikings can beat two teams in the same season that had an identical record to the Dolphins.

The Vikings can beat a 17-0 New Orleans Saints team and an 18-0 Indianapolis Colts team on their way to the NFL Championship.

In measuring champions, we don’t just look at the numbers of wins and losses. We also measure champions by the competition with which they do battle.

One of the reasons that we recognize Muhammad Ali as the greatest heavyweight boxing champion of all time is because of the amazing talent in the weight class at the time of his reign.

Would anyone really consider Ali the greatest if his bouts with smokin’ Joe Frazier, Sonny Liston, Ken Norton, Sr., and George Foreman were replaced with multiple bouts with Zora Folley, Alvin Lewis, Henry Cooper, and Brian London?

The achievement of the Dolphins in winning 17 games is amazing, without a doubt. Yet one of the reasons the Dolphins haven’t universally been labeled the greatest team of all time is the level of competition that they faced in the playoffs.

Miami played good teams, but none of the teams they played in the playoffs had superstars at the peak or near the peak of their abilities.

The Dolphins beat the Cleveland Browns 20-14 and the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-17.

The Browns’ leading rusher did not reach 900 yards and their starting quarterback Mike Phipps had 16 interceptions while throwing only 13 touchdowns.

The Steelers had not yet hit their stride as quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. While running back Franco Harris did rush for more than 1,000 yards, he also had seven fumbles.

Even if the Saints and Colts lose a game before the playoffs begin, the Vikings, in beating a 16-1 Saints team and 17-1 Colts team, would be more impressive than the run of the 1972 Dolphins.

Of course, if we are talking about impressive playoff runs increasing the stock of a champion, the fans of the 49ers and Bears can claim that their respective teams are the best of all time, ahead of the 1972 Dolphins.

The 1984 Super Bowl Champion 49ers had an impressive playoff run in beating the New York Giants 21-10 and shutting out the emerging Chicago Bears 23-0. The 49ers then throttled a record-setting year by NFL MVP Dan Marino and his Miami Dolphins 38-16 in the Super Bowl.

Beating Marino was no small accomplishment in 1984, as he had a season for the ages: 64.2 percent completion rate, 5,084 yards, 48 TDs, and only 17 interceptions. The Dolphins also had two receivers, Mark Clayton and Mark Duper, who both had more than 1,300 receiving yards.

The 1985 Super Bowl Champion Bears, however, had an even more impressive playoff run. The Bears pitched two shutouts in the NFC playoffs, beating the New York Giants 21-0 and the Los Angeles Rams 24-0.

The Giants were led by Phil Simms, who threw for 4,004 yards and 22 touchdowns. The Rams had the game’s best running back in Eric Dickerson, who rushed for the highest season total in NFL history at 2,105 yards.

The Bears then went on to demolish the New England Patriots 46-10 in the Super Bowl.

Which bring us back to why the Vikings should be considered the best team of all time if they beat the undefeated or even one-loss New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts on their way to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

If the Vikings beat the Saints and Colts, they will have beaten two of the best quarterbacks in the history of the league while both were at the top of their game and leading candidates for league MVP honors.

The numbers Brees and Manning are putting up this year are very similar to the numbers put up by Marino in 1984.

The Saints’ Drew Brees has a completion rate of 68.1 percent and is on pace to throw for 4,394 yards, 35 touchdowns, and only 14 interceptions. The Colts’ Peyton Manning has a completion rate of 69.8 percent and is also on a torrid pace, as he is projected to throw for 5,069 yards, 34 touchdowns and only 14 interceptions.

Last year, Brees threw for more than 5,000 yards. Brees has thrown for more than 4,400 yards in the last three seasons.

If Manning throws for more than 5,000 yards this season, his fans won’t have to apologize for placing him ahead of Brees, as Manning has thrown for more than 4,000 yards in nine of his last 10 seasons.

If the Vikings beat both the Saints and Colts, will any NFL team in reaching the pinnacle have faced two better quarterbacks in their prime?

Will style points matter? Don’t style points always matter in these debates?

A close game won by the Vikings on a questionable call made by the replay officials will obviously taint any claim that the Vikings may have to the best team of all time.

An injury by Brees or Manning that renders them unable to play the Vikings will also diminish the achievement of the Vikings.

But if the Vikings beat both the Saints and Colts, Vikings fans may finally have a season to make them forget about the four prior, failed attempts at claiming NFL immortality in the big game.

Yes, there is a lot of football left to be played. All three teams have roadblocks in their way before the end of the season.

Who knows, the final six weeks of the season could be unkind to the remaining three elite teams in the NFL.

As the reigning Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers are finding out this season, the fortunes of a team can dramatically change with an injury to one or two key players.

Hopefully, the three elite teams will avoid the injury bug and give NFL fans a special postseason treat.

If the Saints and Colts finish the regular season undefeated or with only one loss and the Vikings finish the regular season 15-1, the Vikings may not be simply playing for the Super Bowl, but may be playing for the title of the best team in NFL history.

Posted by Matt Field

Now that the Titans have remembered that they are a pretty solid football team, they run into the next biggest game of the season. The opponent, the Houston Texans and those Texans can play some ball, when they want to.

So, we know the Titans will get their points, but can the defense find a way to limit the damage of a potentially explosive Texans attack?

Even with all the offense that will be on display, I believe the ‘W’ will hinge on the defensive play of both teams. In week 2, the Titans could find a rhythm on defense. That was week 2.

The Titans offense (Chris Johnson) is clicking and the defense is improving each week. I doubt their will be any issues with putting the points up, but when it comes to slowing the Texans the pass is where it’s at. The Texans’ running game has been weak this season and if you can limit the air attack, odds are that the ground game will not cause severe damage.

Speaking of running games: can Houston stop Titans’ running back Chris Johnson? Sure, they can stack the box and try to limit the rush, but CJ can burn you with the recieving game just as easily. Even with teams focusing on Johnson’s running talent, he is still on pace to rush for over 2,000 yards. A guy that used to be just a bright spot on a bad team is now leading the way on the current win streak and hints of MVP chatter have emerged.

Mix in the change at quarterback, going with Vince Young presents another challenge for opposing defenses. Depending on which Vince shows up, the Texans may have enough defense to keep up. If Young plays like he has lately, I like the Titans chances in any game.

With both teams getting it figured out on offense, the smarter defense will make the difference in this one. I expect miscues and turnovers to play a large role in Monday night’s game. If the Titans can limit the big plays of the Texans’ offense, extending the win streak to four games is within reach.

Enjoy the game!

Posted by Matt Field

A little Captain Morgan was a lot too much for the National Football league.

The Diageo-owned rum brand sacked some publicity when it coaxed Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek to strike its trademark captain’s pose after scoring a touchdown during last Sunday night’s Philadelphia-Dallas game in exchange for a $10,000 donation to a charity that supports retired NFL players.

But now the league is moving to make sure it won’t happen again, promising a “significant” penalty for the next player who pulls a similar stunt, although neither Mr. Celek nor teammate Jason Avant, who assisted with the pose, were fined this time.

The Captain Morgan stunt was, in effect, a double no-no for the NFL, which, like all leagues, has strict rules forbidding ambush marketing stunts on the field of play in order to protect the pricey exclusive deals signed by its own sponsors.

Beyond that, however, the league also forbids any active player or coach from endorsing alcoholic beverage brands, which, for instance, is why those goofy Coors Light press conference ads only feature retired coaches. Chastened — and no doubt reveling in the attention — Diageo trotted out the Captain himself to issue a statement via PR Newswire this afternoon.

“Captain Morgan here, as you know I believe in celebrating legendary times with my fans and my friends and always doing so in a socially responsible manner. I am a man of action, a man of the moment, and I always make fun a priority. And when it comes to football what is more fun than a touchdown? I believe in drinking responsibly, marketing responsibly and helping charities too, but understand my friends at the NFL’s perspective. I will continue in my quest for legendary times and ask my fans to do the same.”
